A function is a mapping，即 a recipe that outputs a real number for (any) given real number。（某些functions仅定义在a subset of the real numbers。） function的input number通常写为 x x x，输出常称为 y y y，若function名为 f f f，则该function value可写为 y = f ( x ) y=f(x) y=f(x)。 如： Z : { 0 , 1 } m → F Z: \{0,1\}^m\rightarrow \mathbb{F} Z:{0,1}m→F为a function。
2. polynomial定义基于一个变量 x x x的polynomial为：a finite sum of monomials，其中a monomial (in x x x)为 an integer power of x x x times a real number（而 x x x的指数为range from 0 up to any positive integer）。 monomial举例有： x 3 ; 4.5 x 3 ; − 5 3 x 3 ; x 777 ; 1 ; 5 x ; − 6.5 x^3; 4.5x^3; -\frac{5}{3}x^3; x^{777}; 1; 5x; -6.5 x3;4.5x3;−35x3;x777;1;5x;−6.5等等。 如： Z ~ : F m → F \tilde{Z}: \mathbb{F}^m\rightarrow \mathbb{F} Z~:Fm→F为a polynomial。
3. function和polynomial的关系-
所有的polynomial都可称为function： 如polynomial 3 x 3 − 5.5 x + 7 3x^3-5.5x+7 3x3−5.5x+7 可表示为function y = f ( x ) = 3 x 3 − 5.5 x + 7 y=f(x)=3x^3-5.5x+7 y=f(x)=3x3−5.5x+7，其中the output for input a a a is 3 a 3 − 5.5 a + 7 3a^3-5.5a+7 3a3−5.5a+7。

但是很多function并不是polynomial： 如 y = f ( x ) = 2 x y=f(x)=2^x y=f(x)=2x以及 y = f ( x ) = 1 x = x − 1 y=f(x)=\frac{1}{x}=x^{-1} y=f(x)=x1=x−1等都不是polynomial。

若两个functions a ( x ) , b ( x ) a(x),b(x) a(x),b(x)相等，则是指 for every x x x in their domain，有 a ( x ) = b ( x ) a(x)=b(x) a(x)=b(x)成立。 举例为： 两个polynomials a ( x ) , b ( x ) a(x), b(x) a(x),b(x) in Z 5 [ x ] \mathbb{Z}_5[x] Z5[x]： a ( x ) = x 5 + 1 a(x)=x^5+1 a(x)=x5+1 b ( x ) = x − 4 b(x)=x-4 b(x)=x−4 有： a ( 0 ) = b ( 0 ) , a ( 1 ) = b ( 1 ) , ⋯ , a ( 4 ) = b ( 4 ) a(0)=b(0), a(1)=b(1), \cdots, a(4)=b(4) a(0)=b(0),a(1)=b(1),⋯,a(4)=b(4) 可称 a ( x ) a(x) a(x)和 b ( x ) b(x) b(x)为equal functions from Z 5 \mathbb{Z}_5 Z5 to Z 5 \mathbb{Z}_5 Z5。
